Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS)
The Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) is an interactive museum dedicated to educating and promoting earth science to the public. In its current incarnation AMOS (formerly the Colburn Earth Science Museum) suffers from a lack of visual presence and identity within the fabric of downtown Asheville.
Currently the museum is located in a windowless tenant space in Pack Place. A new location in the Wells Fargo building in downtown Asheville allows for a visual street presence and gives the museum the ability to draw in pedestrians.
The relocation of AMOS into it’s new 7,000 square foot space required initial programming and planning as well as studies for the external treatment of the facade. Programming requirements for AMOS include exhibit areas, a science theater, retail space, class rooms, and staff support areas. In order to set the entrance for AMOS apart from adjacent tenants, the exterior required a distinct entry with a visual presence that begins to echo the mission and brand of the museum. Along with initial programming documents, SPARC created conceptual renderings for the interior and exterior of AMOS to use in fundraising campaigns.
