Visitors Center

SAPPHIRE, NC

Working with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, partner Peyton Shumate while at Clark Nexsen (formerly PBC+L), designed a new visitor center for Gorges State Park.  This area features long range views of mountains as well as waterfalls and numerous hiking trails.

The schematic design of the Gorges State Park Visitors Center reflects the natural setting by incorporating materials like heavy timber and stone as well as large windows framing long range views.  One of the iconic features of the visitor center is constructed waterfall at the entry.  A large concrete plinth is exactly designed to allow water to cascade down its face providing the look and sound of the common waterfalls in the area.
