The Shift Residence
CHATTANOOGA, TN
A submission in the NextGen Design Competition, the goal of the Shift Residence was to create a housing prototype that was both environmentally and economically sustainable. The competition featured a challenging site with steep grades and the requirement of a net zero development. Four homes are proposed for the site which respond to the steep slope by limiting the overall footprint to a compact size and shape. Aligning the homes along the street may have been easier, but would have required more active systems to provide a net zero solution. Instead, the houses were shifted to allow for as much passive solar as possible. By modeling the performance of each home a balance between passive and active strategies could be achieved. The Shift Residence merged low-maintenance materials with a modern aesthetic that seamlessly fits within the surrounding community. To keep land disturbance to a minimum, walking bridges were provided to homes located off the street access. The design promotes clean, simple living.
SPARC Design collaborated with Vandemusser Design and Motley Construction on this submission.
