WCU Career Center
The WCU Career CenterĀ is a proposed 3,000 square foot addition / up-fit located in the Reid Building at Western Carolina University. The Purpose of the Career CenterĀ is to provide students with the guidance and work space necessary to successfully pursue job opportunities after graduation.
The program contains open peer education space, private offices, interview practice rooms, a conference room and a break room. After various programming studies an open floor plan was settled on. This openness provides a communal educational space at the center of the addition surrounded by staff support areas and interview practice rooms.
WCU chose to carve out space for the program in the existing Reid Building. In order to draw attention to the new Career Center and activate an otherwise barren existing facade, we decided to explore the concept of extrusion. Most of the program remains in the existing building as up-fit space while the entry and conference room portion of the program are extruded out through a punched opening in the Reid Buildings western facade. This extruded portion of the program creates a formal entry to the WCU Career Center and allows it to have a visual presence from Memorial Drive.
