WCU Hinds Hall Retrofit
This retrofit involves the renovation and modernization of a former 4,000 square foot retail space to accommodate the Western Carolina Universitiy Department of Intercultural Affairs (ICA). The relocation of the ICA to the main level of the Hinds University Center provides the department with greater exposure to the student population and a larger space. Along with a new location, the design reflects the desire for students to DISCOVER and CONNECT with the ICA.
The new ICA provides opportunities for student interaction through the use planning and architecture. A recharging station at the ICA entrance creates a small lounge area allowing students to interact with and use the space in a highly visible way. A storefront gallery allows the ICA to promote their mission while educating students, faculty, and visitors to the Hinds Center through the use of rotating exhibits. A open floor plan is utilized to accommodate study groups and presentations. The retrofit also contains department offices and a conference room. Through these subtle design moves, the architecture supports and encourages an inclusive environment while promoting the mission of the department.
